It sounds like a simple question, but this used to be a big issue for me when I started planning my own workouts and plans.

You walk into the gym, your garage, storage room, basement, bedroom or living room (all have been true in my case), and you have no idea what to do.

You start thinking.

  • Do I hit chest?
  • Do I hit back?
  • What machines are open?
  • What did I do yesterday?
  • Do I hit legs? (this question was rarely asked)

At the end of the day, just pick something and go.

The Problem Isn’t Motivation, It’s Decision Fatigue

I’d say a lot of people don’t skip workouts because they’re lazy, they just don’t know what to do, how long they have, or what they want to hit.

And when there is no plan, it can turn into doing absolutely nothing, especially if you’ve told yourself you’re going to do a home workout, where it’s easy to quit.

I’ve been there. I actually did this yesterday.

You Don’t Need the Perfect Workout

There are thousands, if not millions, of workout plans online. YouTube videos, websites, TikToks, and the gym bro who said this arm workout will explode your triceps. And yes, they all probably work if you actually do them and they align with your goals.

But none of them matter if you don’t commit. What actually matters is showing up, doing something structured (with good form), and staying consistent.

So… What Workout Should You Do Today?

Here’s a simple way to think about it:

Pick:

  • a muscle group (chest, back, legs, etc.)
  • 4–12 exercises depending on time
  • a weight that challenges you
  • and just go

That’s really all it needs to be. It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Or, if you don’t feel like thinking about it, use my free workout generator and get moving. Up to you!

Hope you have a great workout,
